MiniBridge Part 2 - Improving your game

Lesson 4 of 7.

Plan the Play - Suit Contracts

Continue

Key points:

  1. We count our top winners outside the trump suit in the same way as we did for no trumps.
  2. In the trump suit we count how many tricks we could win assuming we are leading trumps.
  3. We usually have fewer top winners than tricks required, so need to look for additional tricks.

Key points:

  1. We need 8 or more cards in a suit to choose it as trumps. This is so that we can draw the defender's trumps without too much difficulty.
  2. We usually try to draw trumps first (to make it less likely the defenders can ruff our winners).
  3. If there is one trump outstanding and it’s a winner, we generally don’t draw it.

Question 1 of 1. #199

In a suit contract why do we generally draw trumps first?

Key points:

  1. Ruffing can generate extra tricks.
  2. We need a short suit or void in one hand (usually the dummy).  The same suit must be longer in the other hand.
  3. The short suit needs to be in the hand with the shorter trumps (usually the dummy).
  4. Sometimes we need to delay drawing trumps to ensure we have one or more trumps left in the hand where we want to ruff.

Key points:

  1. We try to avoid defenders ruffing our top winners by drawing trumps.
  2. Sometimes we need to delay drawing trumps to ensure we have one or more trumps left in the hand where we want to ruff to get extra tricks.
  3. We ruff as high as we can afford to try and avoid the defenders overruffing.

Key points:

  1. First count trump winners and top winners outside trumps.
  2. Identify sources of extra tricks.
  3. Consider if some of those require action before drawing trumps.
  4. Form the plan. Keep the plan simple. We need to remember it until we have finished.

Take time to make a plan before playing these hands
