Key points:

  1. Before playing any card, take some time to plan the play. Defenders will expect to wait a couple of minutes while declarer makes a plan.
  2. Top winners are cards we can win with without losing the lead.
  3. We can't have more top winners in a suit than we have cards in the longer hand.
  4. We count down the top cards until we reach a gap (or reach the length of the suit in longer hand).
  5. We usually don't have enough top winners to make the contract.
  6. Counting top winners is the first part of planning the play, not how we will actually play them. It is rarely right to start by playing our top winners.

Key points:

  1. A suit is blocked when there are high cards in the way, preventing us from transferring the lead from one hand to the other in that suit.
  2. With high cards in both hands, we generally play high cards from the short side first. This helps avoid a suit becoming blocked.

Play hand - Playing the cards in the right order

Key points:

  1. An entry is a high card that allows us to transfer the lead from one hand to the other.
  2. We must be careful not to play our entry card too early when we have a suit that is blocked.
  3. This is another reason why it is important to plan the play before playing any card. For example, to see whether it matters in which hand we win the first trick.
