FOR INTERMEDIATE/CLUB PLAYERS

The Surrey competitions season is nearly over but there are two more competitions you might be interested in entering.  Both are 'Swiss' format events which make them ideal for intermediate players as the movement is organised so that you generally meet players of the same level.  The EBU website has a good article explaining how 'Swiss' events work

http://www.ebu.co.uk/faq/eventsfaq/swissevents.htm

Swiss events are great fun so why not give one a try if you haven't done so before.

NO FEAR BRIDGE HAITI APPEAL

Don't people do amazing things to raise money! Last week I saw the programme on Eddie Izzard's 43 marathons in 51 days.  Incredible!

A Plan International’s psychosocial games club

I won't be running any marathons (!) but I plan to do some fun bridge and other activities in the coming months for the No Fear Bridge Plan Haiti appeal (see the JustGiving page for why I chose this).

Plan's work in Haiti focuses on children and families. Plan’s immediate focus is on protecting vulnerable children from trafficking and sexual exploitation. They have also set up temporary schools in various regions of Haiti.

Here's what's coming up to set the ball rolling:

1.  Next Fri 19th March (Fri members only)    Duplicate practice morning. Mixture of Takeout Doubles, Penalty Doubles and the usual 'practice session' hands.

Normal table money which will all go to the appeal.   I will be raffling some bridge related prizes, including a free bridge lesson, plus some bridge books and disks.    Additional donations optional.

2. No Fear Bridge Poker League (not playing for money!)

Every Wednesday evening 7.30 - 10.00pm at Leigh's in Byfleet starting Wed 24th March.  All welcome, no previous experience required as tuition will be given from 7.00-7.30 for anyone who hasn't played before.

Cost £4.00 including refreshments.

Please email leigh@bridgeplayer.net or phone 01932 344609 to book your place.

3.  Thursday 15th April 2.00-5.00.  Seminar on Slam Bidding using Roman Keycard Blackwood and Cue Bidding.

Cost £13.00 all proceeds to the appeal.  Full details and booking form.

4. No Fear Bridge will match all individuals donations to the Just Giving Page or by cash or cheque in March (up to a total of £500).

So it would be great if you can send a donation via the JustGiving page now.  No amount too small!  If you wish, it can be done anonymously with neither your name or the amount showing.  Or if you prefer, you can send a cheque to No Fear Bridge and I will transfer it to the appeal.

You'll find lots more info on the JustGiving page.

WINCHESTER BRIDGE WEEKEND 30th July - 1st Aug

Still time to book for Harold Schogger's bridge weekend 30th July.   I will be going along with other people from the club and classes.  I do hope you will join us for a fun weekend!

The 'level' is for improver and intermediate players, so it won't be '24 boards in three hours' speed.  It is suitable for Thursday and Friday players and any Wednesday players who are happy to play without crib sheets.

Full details and booking form

Please send your booking direct to Harold Schogger but also let me know you have booked then I can compile a list of who's going.

BRIDGE WEEKEND FOR NOVICES 16th-18th April

LEIGH'S NEWS

The teaching website suddenly became very busy in February (I think it was because of prolonged spell of rainy weather!) causing it to go slow!.  It was a stressful week moving it to a new faster server,  but now everything is running smoothly again.

The good news is that my expert bridge partner has agreed to do the Level 2 and 3 'Hand of the Day'!  There is a new hand every day.  Watch out for some interesting problems and great explanations of how you should be thinking to plan the the best line of play.
